Methamphetamine Recovered From Cross-Border Courier

Arizona Daily Star

The Drug Enforcement Agency and the Cochise County Sheriff's Department confirmed today that an anonymous tip led them to the recovery of almost $200,000 in methamphetamine being ferried across the border and the arrest of several suspected drug couriers who went into the Whetstone Mountains to recover it. A DEA spokesman confirmed that seven arrests were made, and federal drug charges had been brought. According to police documents, two drug couriers from Mexico crossed into the United States, but died after a fall in the Whetstone Mountains. "The route they selected was very rough," said Coronado National Forest Ranger Guy Darrigo. "They had climbing gear and plenty of supplies, but even experienced climbers can lose their way in the Whetstones."

When the couriers were overdue, the intended recipients of the methamphetamine went into the Whetstones, working their way backwards to try to find the drugs, say police.

Further Information

Although it does not make the newspapers, within forty-eight hours, the arrestees are released.

If inquiry is made, the agent in charge of the operation is Roy Cardwell of the DEA, though most of the police firepower was supplied by the Cochise County Sheriff.

A successful investigation or use of Contacts in law enforcement reveals that Cardwell was given the tip a very short time before the second group of couriers found the meth, so they had to move quickly, and ended up not being able to tie the meth to the suspects. The tip, contrary to the news story and many other reports, was not anonymous, but came from one of Cardwell's confidential informants.

A successful investigation or use of Contacts in street or criminal dealings reveals that the meth belonged to the Montes De Oca cartel, who is running very short of product just at the moment...
