In fall 2008, the Gomez family came across a supernatural threat to their activities. As they hid in an abandoned ranch house in Cochise County, they were assailed by the manifestation of a crazed spirit, wrapped in rusty barbed wire, bearing a massive, dried-out ocotillo tree on her back. Trina Nunez had been raped and murdered crossing the border several years earlier, and her child had been carried away by a friend. Now, insane with grief and anger, she stalked la frontera looking for her child and trying to steal away other children making the crossing "for practice".
The Montes de Oca family, acting on information from its in-house occultist, utilized hazardous material suits to obtain an evil occult artifact, the Unborn Venom from where it rested in an abandoned mission high in the hills above Hermosillo. However, when it was transported across the border, the courier was poisoned by the item, and died. Although the Montes de Ocas and Gomezes both learned about the courier (though the Gomezes did not know what it was carrying), the item was in fact retrieved by a creature occupying the body of an Intentionality Meditation cultist. When the Gomezes arrived on the scene, they found one of its associates wandering the desert mumbling about how beautiful the item was. When it was found out, it attacked and was killed and dumped in the desert, where it appeared it had been dead for some time.
"The Old Man From Ensenada", Francisco Mendez, is informed by the Changelings that have been his partners and controllers for over fifty years that his death is imminent. He is to locate a successor - but unbeknownst to them he intends to select one that may shake up the situation more than preserve it: Mercedes Gomez. He announces this to his sons "Little Frankie" and Rinaldo. Little Frankie immediately goes to Tucson to find out who the hell this is and if he can murder her.
